Protein Whoopie Pies

So I keep hearing about these things called “whoopie pies.” Now some purists might say that this is a food that cannot be WLS friendly. BUT I SAY NAY!!! So I decided to try. But more than that…I decided to take you guys along with me for the ride…whether you wanna go or not!

Now I know what you want to ask having seen that. How do I make a protein brownie?!?! The recipe is right here on the blog and linked for your convenience (‘cept I modified a bit. Skipped the Blue Bonnet Light and just used applesauce. Warning: these need to chill in the fridge for an hour or two to “come into” their full sweetness). Now with all that information in hand… go make whoopie people!!!! Do it for yourselves. Do it for your significant other. Do it for your country!!!

  1. I just stumbled upon your website (thanks to Pam from "A Journey to a Healthier Me") and wanted to say I love your website and the food! As an almost 2 year post-op I can say I am always on the hunt for new sf/wls friendly desserts and believe me whoopie pie is my next adventure!!

  2. I just got to see this… now i'm going to go make brownies so I can make whoopie…

  3. what type of chocolate whey do you use? I know you use Any Whey in your cooking but this does not specify. I also know that most of the whey cannot be cooked with. I want to make these ASAP! Thanks for all that you do Nic

  4. Who told you that. Of COURSE you can cook with whey. You just have to know how. If you search "protein cake" here on the blog I have recipes! Doesn't matter what kind of protein you use. You can use what YOU like best. FWIW, I use Pure protein frosty chocolate but any protein powder will do. 🙂

  5. I over cooked. or used the wrong sized pan…mine is more like protein biscotti…

  6. Shannon,

Usually that happens to me when I overcook and the tricky part is that the timing is different in different ovens and depends on a few different factors (how long you preheat, if you have an old or new oven, etc.). But it definitely sounds like it cooked a bit too long. Protein cooks fast so hang out in the kitchen while it cooks and check it often.

But my REAL question is…were they at least tasty protein biscottis?

  7. So you said you skipped the light blue bonnet and just used apple sauce…so just the amount of apple sauce listed or did you also replace the blue bonnet with apple sauce, thus increasing the apple sauce?

  8. Maureen,

You guys keep me on my toes! Thanks for pointing this out. With the protein brownie recipe, I actually would keep the Blue Bonnet actually (I need to fix that!) or a little bit of oil. It benefits the texture! I'll tweak the recipe now while I'm thinking about it.

  9. Ok, I'm missing where in the linked recipe (the recipe linked under the video) I say I skipped the Blue Bonnet. Is it in the replies? I must have Friday brain. But the recipe I linked to is the one I use (as printed in the original post).

  10. You didn't say you skipped it in the linked recipe but under the video clip above, you say you skipped the blue bonnet light. So no problem I will just use the recipe as written when I click on the link (4Tbsp of blue bonnet light & 1/3 cup unsweetened apple sauce)…wondering if you skipped it just for the purpose of making whoopie pies?

  11. Maureen,

I'm going to have a moment of unbridled honesty. I think I did that video a few years ago so I don't remember! I do make the brownies all the time though and I use the recipe in the link. Sorry for the confusion! Thankfully in the years since I made that I learned to take better recipe notes. 🙂

  12. I was cracking up when I saw this video. I am only a week post op but I look so forward to trying some of the recipes especially the "Whoppie Pie".
    thank you creating this site.
